HHS testing czar Brett Giroir touted the Abbott test at a Rose Garden press conference Monday as “highly sophisticated.” More than 235,000 of the rapid tests have been sent to public health labs across the country and over 90,000 have been provided to the Indian Health Service, he said. The White House referred questions about the test’s accuracy to FDA.
“We are reviewing the information in this non-peer reviewed study,” an agency spokesperson told POLITICO.
Abbott spokesperson Darcy Ross said that the NYU researchers used the rapid test platform “in a manner that it’s not intended to be used.”
“The outcomes in this paper are inconsistent with any experience that we’ve had with this instrument,“ she added. Abbott says that providers in the field report about 0.02 percent of test results are false negatives.
But Wells noted that staff at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital were able to transport 93 percent of study samples to the lab for testing within an hour after they were collected. That’s „excellent performance and better than what you can expect in field deployment,“ he said.
