GOP governor breaks with Trump: ‘We’re not going to be up and running by Easter’

Vice President Mike Pence on Friday called Trump’s proposed Easter deadline an „aspirational goal,“ and said the administration will assess data on a county-by-county basis. Pence is in charge of the White House coronavirus response effort.

„The president said he would love to see it around Easter, but whenever that day is that we can responsibly begin to open up portions of the country,“ Pence said during a CNBC interview. „But let me be very clear, there’s going to be areas of the country where we need to continue to lean into mitigation efforts.“

Massachusetts reported 2,417 coronavirus cases as of Thursday afternoon, and 25 people have died from the virus. The state says it has tested more than 23,500 people.

Baker has taken aggressive steps to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. He ordered nonessential businesses to close, issued a stay-at-home advisory for Bay State residents and said public and private schools should remain closed until May 4.

On Friday, Baker announced all travelers arriving in Massachusetts should self-quarantine for 14 days. Travelers will be given informational fliers at major airports, train stations and rest stops, the governor said. The state will also display information on roadside message boards.
