Kamala Harris Joins Beto in Supporting a Mandatory Buyback Program on Assault Weapons

Kamala Harris has made it clear she agrees with fellow 2020 Democrat candidate Beto O’Rourke on a mandatory buyback program for assault weapons” including AR-15s during an appearance on “The Tonight Show.”

“Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” Beto said during the 3rd Democrat party debate. “We’re not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans any more.”

CNN pundit Amanda Carpenter blasted former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke on Friday over his vow during Thursday night’s primary debate to seize AR-15s, warning that his remarks had “significantly” improved President Trump‘s chances of being reelected.

Of O’Rourke’s pledge to “take” AR-15s and AK-47s, she said the damage goes far beyond the Dem presidential hopeful’s campaign.

“I’m one of those moms who’s very worried about school shootings [and] believe in the Second Amendment… I am angry at what Beto O’Rourke said, not because I think it’s unworkable. It’s because I think it’s going to stop any chance of getting anything done in Washington,” Carpenter began. “If you want stronger background checks, ‘red flag’ laws, two things I’m very interested in, Beto just did a huge disservice to that because no Republican can go to the table now in good faith thinking that liberals don’t want to take your guns. Because you have Beto on the tape right there.”

Fox News reports Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., expressed her support for a mandatory buyback program for “assault weapons” on Monday during her appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Towards the end of her interview, she took questions from the audience, made up of mostly college students. One of them had pressed Harris about her stance on guns.

“Do you believe in the mandatory buyback of quote-unquote assault weapons and whether or not you do, how does that idea not go against fundamentally the Second Amendment?” Andrew from Fordham University asked.

“Great question. I do believe that we need to do buybacks and I’ll tell you why,” Harris responded. “First of all, let’s be clear about what assault weapons are. They have been designed to kill a lot of human beings quickly. They are weapons of war with no place on the streets of a civil society. I’ve seen assault weapons kill babies and police officers.”

The 2020 hopeful then reiterated her threat of executive order as president if Congress doesn’t act on gun reform, but stressed that the “over 2 million” assault weapons currently in the streets need to be addressed.

“A buyback program is a good idea. Now we need to do it the right way,” Harris continued. “And part of that has to be, you know, buy back and give people their value, the financial value of what they have and not just take things from people that have value without compensating them. We need to do it the right way.”
