Pres Trump Reacts To USA Today Poll That Found 80% Of Americans Support ‘Temporary Immigration Halt’

Monday night, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he will order a temporary halt on immigration while the United States recovers from the devastating economic impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The fallout from virus shutdowns has included 25 million unemployed Americans.

“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” the president declared in a tweet.

During Tuesday’s White House Coronavirus Task Force briefing, the Commander in Chief said that he will be “issuing a temporary suspension into the United States” to protect American workers.

“It would be wrong and unjust to Americans laid off by the virus to be replaced by new immigrant labor flown in from abroad. We must first take care of the American worker,” he stated.

“This pause will be in effect for 60 days, after which, the need for an extension or modification will be evaluated by myself and a group of people based on economic conditions at the time. This order will only apply to individuals seeking permanent residency. … As we move forward, we will examine what additional immigration-related measures should be put in place to protect U.S. workers,” the president explained.

“We want to protect our U.S. workers and I think, as we move forward, we will become more and more protective of them,” he added. Continued Below

Buried deep in the underbelly of a USA Today story from April 13 is a stunning statistic, National File pointed out: “About 8 in 10 support drastic steps on immigration: imposing mandatory quarantines for people who have traveled to any other country and temporarily stopping immigration from all other countries,” according to a poll by Ipsos and USA Today.

Meaning, 80% of Americans support a total immigration halt. [Emphasis added].

During Tuesday’s White House briefing, OANN’s Chief White House correspondent Chanel Rion asked the president about the USA poll, and whether public support had any impact on his decision making to halt immigration during the coronavirus crisis. Video Below

“Are you surprised by those numbers?” Chanel Rion asked the president of the USA Today poll.

“Yeah, it’s a high number. I did not see that number. I heard there was a poll, I’m sure there will be a lot of polls. I think the American people want to make sure that they have jobs for the American people, not people, in many cases illegally into our country. I don’t know what the numbers are, but just common sense tells you that’s where we should be, and that’s where the American people want to be,” President Trump explained.

“We’re going to build our country back, and I’m telling you the things that we’re doing and infrastructure, which we desperately need, it’s gonna be an incredible thing taking place. I think it’s gonna be a renaissance. … A lot of people are gonna go to work building those roads and bridges and tunnels, highways, and all of the other things that we are going to be building. And broadband for the midwest,” he added.
