USAToday reports a Republican-affiliated PAC ran an ad during the Democratic presidential debate calling out “socialism” and asking if voters wanted progressive Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., to be the future of America.
The video is narrated by Elizabeth Heng, a former Republican congressional candidate in California, and was run by a PAC that aims to recruit more diverse Republican political candidates.
“This is the face of socialism,” Heng says, as a picture of Ocasio-Cortez burns and cuts away to scenes of the Cambodian genocide.
“That’s socialism,” she says of the authoritarian Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia.
“Mine is a face of freedom, my skin is not white, I’m not outrageous, racist, nor socialist. I’m a Republican,” she concludes.

Per RollCall, Ocasio-Cortez responded to the ad on Twitter, writing, “Republicans are running TV ads setting pictures of me on fire to convince people they aren’t racist. Life is weird!” In a later tweet, she called the spot “a love letter to the GOP’s white supremacist case.”
