Pew Study Finds Favorability of Democrats Falling Since 2018 Midterms

The Democrat party may be suffering from some of their top tier candidates pushing progressive policies that are not popular with the general voting public according to a new NY Times article.

According to a NPR/Marist poll, 67 percent of registered voters called decriminalization of illegal border crossings “a bad idea?”

In addition, 63% of those polled believe Slavery reparations is a bad idea, and 55% believing replacing private insurance is a bad idea.

Per Mediaite reports a column in The New York Times Tuesday cited a Pew Research Center survey which found that Americans currently hold an unfavorable view of the Democratic party.

According to the poll, 45 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Democrats, compared with 52 percent who hold an unfavorable view. Those numbers mirror the Republican party exactly. The GOP also stands at 45-52 in those metrics.

Last September, ahead of the 2018 midterms, the numbers told a different story. Fifty-three percent of Americans had a favorable opinion of Democrats prior to the election, compared to 42 percent who had an unfavorable opinion. Republicans, meanwhile, boasted just a 43 percent favorable number, with 52 percent unfavorable.

Per the NYTimes, Democrats are frittering away their advantage — and damaging their image. Last fall, most Americans had a favorable view of the Democratic Party, according to the Pew Research Center. That makes sense, because Democrats ran a populist campaign in the 2018 midterms, focused on pocketbook issues that dominate many people’s lives, like wages and medical costs.

This year, the polling has flipped. Most Americans now have an unfavorable view of the party, no better than their view of the Republican Party. Likewise, slightly more voters say the “ideas being offered by the Democratic candidates” would hurt the country than say would help, according to the NPR poll.
