Several High Profile Dem Candidates Have Not Qualified for the Next Debate

Only eight candidates have qualified so far for the next Democrat debates in September.

Notably missing are Kirsten Gillibrand, Julian Castro, Marianne Williamson and Tulsi Gabbard, though they still have time to potentially qualify.

Twenty eager presidential hopefuls appeared at Detroit’s Fox Theatre at the end of July, drawing some complaints of a too-crowded Democratic field that limited the amount of back-and-forth conversation between candidates.

But a winnowing is about to happen.

For the next debate at Texas Southern University in Houston on Sept. 12 and 13, the Democratic National Committee will require each candidate to have at least 2% support in four polls and contributions from at least 130,000 individual donors, thresholds expected to thin the list of candidates.

At present, only eight candidates have hit that mark. Even if several others do, it’s likely many of the others will drop off.

The eight candidates who have qualified for the September debate stage as of Aug. 1.

  • Former Vice President Joe Biden
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont
  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts
  • Sen. Kamala Harris of California
  • Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey
  • Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota
  • South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg
  • Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas
