Cory Booker Proposes White House Office to Combat White Supremacy

Struggling Presidential candidate Cory Booker is proposing a White House Office of “hate crimes and white supremacist violence” as part of several sweeping proposals.

Booker’s debate claim that Democrats lost Michigan because a joint GOP and Russian effort to suppress the African American vote failed Wapo’s fact check and earned him 4 Pinocchios.

Booker claimed Russian and Republican efforts to suppress black votes tipped Michigan into Trump’s victory column. With a narrow margin of less than 11,000 votes, anything is possible, but election experts say there is no evidence the Russian or GOP efforts were successful. Instead, the most likely explanation for the loss was that Hillary Clinton, not Barack Obama, was on the ballot, so turnout by African American voters returned to pre-Obama levels.

Perhaps that’s an argument for a black candidate like Booker to be on the ticket, but he’s wrong to claim the Russians and the GOP were responsible for Clinton’s loss in Michigan. The burden of proof is on Booker, and he failed to back up his claim. He earns Four Pinocchios.

Booker is polling at 2% in the current RCP polling averages.

Per HuffPost, the Democratic presidential candidate’s plan, released Thursday, said that, as president, he would work to improve federal and local policies regarding white supremacist violence, make it easier for victims to report crimes and for communities to access resources, and address online platforms that spread hate and violence.

“So in my administration, we will use the full force of the presidency to combat hate crimes and root out white supremacist threats wherever they arise.”

Among other proposals, Booker’s plan includes creating a White House Office on Hate Crimes and White Supremacist Violence, which would be responsible for coordinating federal agencies and community leaders to improve the response to hate-fueled threats. He also proposed creating a group of “community stakeholders” affected by hate crimes to help advise federal institutions including the White House, the Justice Department, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

The plan also calls for improved data collection on hate crime and white supremacist violence, and it requires the Justice Department and the FBI to prioritize and address such acts in the same way they prioritize international terrorism. Booker also said he’d have the FBI end the “racially motivated violent extremism” category he calls “misleading” and reinstate the specific “white supremacist” designation.
