The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has said that the United States spends a lot of money on helping allies without getting much in return. This was stated before the press in the White House on day 4, when asked about the tensions between the United States and China in the South China Sea.

Without answering the question, Trump commented that the United States has many very strong allies and is doing them a great favor by being present in Asia.

He added that his country is spending a lot of money to help Japan, South Korea and the Philippines, and that in many cases, these people „don’t do so much“ for the United States. Trump went on to say that the United States is helping many people around the world who „never appreciated it“ and that the United States has never had a leader who demands it, highlighting its role.

Trump’s comments generate several interpretations, such as pointing to the elections, or the negotiations on a new spending agreement that entails keeping US troops stationed in South Korea.
