7 crew members aboard hospital ship Mercy test positive for coronavirus

„The ship is following protocols and taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of all crewmembers and patients on board,“ Fage said.

The San Diego Union-Tribune first reported that the number of cases had reached seven.

The 1,000-bed Mercy docked in Los Angeles in late March to relieve the pressure on local hospitals by treating non-coronavirus patients.

The Mercy, along with its twin the USNS Comfort docked in New York Harbor, are not configured to treat infectious diseases. But after receiving only a handful of non-coronavirus patients, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that the Comfort would also treat patients with the coronavirus.

At least one crew member on the Comfort has also tested positive for the virus.
