Peltz, who has an estimated net worth of over $1.5 billion and is currently on the board of Procter & Gamble and serves as the non-executive chairman of Wendy’s, has been friends with Trump for decades, and the two have dined together at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club or at the Peltz residence in Palm Beach over the years.
Invitations to Saturday’s fundraiser went out to couples who donated $580,600, according to the Washington Post, which first reported on the event. That’s the maximum amount an individual can contribute to the committee.
The Trump campaign and the RNC are building a financial advantage over the Democratic National Committee and most of the Democratic presidential candidates; Trump and his party raised a combined $463 million in 2019.
But despite the financial support, there have been some hiccups along the way. Some high-dollar donors have noted the public backlash Stephen Ross’ businesses got after he donated to the president. Loyal patrons of his high end Equinox gym and trendy exercise class SoulCycle signed petitions against Ross and boycotted his business over his support for Trump.
Here in Palm Beach, where the business ventures of the wealthy residents are often big, national brands, there has been hesitation among some big Republican donors to do anything drawing a connection between their companies and Trump. But there has also been competition among some of the island’s richest people, like Peltz and Bill Koch, to host the president for major events.
Last weekend, a telethon held at Mar-a-Lago with the president’s sons, Eric and Don Jr., as well as Kimberly Guilfoyle and Corey Lewandowski, raised $25 million.
“If anything, I would say it’s been very competitive to get the president to do private fundraisers around town. There was a long line out the door and around the corner of high-dollar folks who really wanted to host an event on the island,” said Blair Brandt, a Palm Beach resident and Republican fundraiser. “So when you’re raising $10 million in one night after a $25 million telethon this time last week, that’s incredible momentum and support from the local community.”
Next week, the president will continue his fundraising swing in California, at the Rancho Mirage home of another billionaire, Oracle’s Larry Ellison.
According to the Desert Sun, “Ellison will host supporters on a golf outing at his Porcupine Creek home. For $100,000, supporters can join a golf outing and have their photo taken with the president. For $250,000, contributors get a photo, golf outing and can participate in a round-table discussion.”
