Washington in the Time of Coronavirus

Washington has yet to become a ghost town in the way San Francisco and Seattle have as the coronavirus crisis intensifies. Lawmakers are still working to pass legislation in response to the outbreak, and some federal employees are still required to show up at their offices. But while those struggling to manage the crisis are in a frenzy, the capital region—where the confirmed infection count is nearing 150—is grinding to a halt.

Cultural institutions—museums, concert halls, galleries—have closed their doors. The city has ordered bars and restaurants to stop sit-down service. The Metrorail system rolled back its train schedule. And the tour groups that annually pack the Capitol building and the Supreme Court have all been turned away. With the capital now mostly emptied of its workforce, tourists and traffic, photographer M. Scott Mahaskey captured the city and some of America’s most famous landmarks as they’re rarely seen: closed, vacant and quiet.
