Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) believes when the U.S. economy reopens from the COVID-19 shutdown, people should refuse to return to their jobs, and suggested that that only in America does “liberation” mean going “back to work.”
In an interview with VICE News for the debut show “Seat at the Table” with Anand Giridharadas, the New York congresswoman responded to President Donald Trump’s calls to “liberate” states last week, under the unusual lockdown orders amid protests from citizens.
“LIBERATE MINNESOTA! LIBERATE MICHIGAN! LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!” the President had declared on Twitter.
“Only in America does the president, when the president tweets about liberation, does he mean ‘go back to work.’” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez said.
“We have this discussion about ‘going back’ or ‘reopening’– I think a lot of people should just say, ‘No, we’re not going back to that. We’re not going back to working 70-hour weeks just so that we can put food on the table, and not even feel any sort of semblance of security in our lives.”
Former Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders hit back at AOC on Twitter Thursday, writing: “@AOC says Americans should boycott work. As usual, she’s wrong. The goal should be for Americans to SAFELY return to work because unlike AOC and members of Congress, most of us actually have to show up at work to get paid and support our families! #ProtectLivesProtectLivelihoods”. In an interview on “Fox & Friends” Thursday, Sanders also said of AOC: “This is also a person who may want to go back to her roots and remember that most Americans, unlike those in Congress, have to show up in order to get paid and that they don’t have the luxury of not doing their job and still being able to provide for her family like she does as a member of Congress.”
“There are people who are really hurting,” Sanders continued. “The president is looking for ways to protect them, to help them. She might want to join in that effort instead of putting people down who are struggling and trying to figure out how best to help their families and provide that food.”
“She might want to go back and remember that when she was a bartender and not a member of Congress, she didn’t have that luxury,” Sanders recommended. “She had to show up to do her job in order to get a paycheck and there are millions of Americans [who] are like that [and who] need a paycheck– not just for the money, but also their sense of sanity and their ability to be able to get out and do what they do best, and that’s work hard, because that is who the American people are.” Video Below
“Her totally out-of-touch lack of understanding of that is mind-blowing,” Sanders added.
On Thursday, the Labor Department reported another 4.4 million Americans filed for unemployment claims last week, as massive job losses caused by the pandemic continue to grow. The new report brings total job losses since the outbreak shuttered cities five weeks ago to more than 26 million, erasing the entirety of the 22.78 million labor market gains since the Great Recession more than a decade ago, Fox News reported.
