TALLAHASSEE — The AFL-CIO today canceled a Florida forum featuring Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden.

The event was scheduled for March 12 in Orlando, five days before the state‘s presidential primary in which 219 Democratic delegates will be up for grabs.

Carolyn Bobb, a spokeswoman for the AFL-CIO, said that the forum was scrapped due to the “ongoing coronavirus outbreak.”

The state on Friday reported two deaths from the virus.

Florida looms as a potential make-or-break moment for Biden and Sanders. The former vice president is seen as the front-runner in the state, a status he cemented after former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg dropped out of the race Wednesday. Hillary Clinton bested Sanders by 30 points in the Florida Democratic primary four years ago.

Recent polls have shown Biden with a lead in the state, and a line of Florida elected Democrats have thrown their support to the former vice president in the last few days.

The Florida AFL-CIO claims more than 1 million union members, retirees, and their families in the state. Their ranks include state workers, teachers, firefighters, maintenance workers, and various trades.
