Trump Slams Obama and Biden Over “Mess” They Created with China

On Friday, President Trump slammed his predecessor Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden for what he said amounted to their roles in creating a “mess” regarding US relations with both China and North Korea.

“If you look at what we’ve straightened out, I call it the Obama-Biden mess,” said Trump, explaining, “We’re straightening it out.”

Trump speculated that the United States was “going to end up in a war with North Korea, and now the relationship is a good relationship,” while going on to slam Biden’s efforts working with China.

“You look at what Joe Biden has done with China,” said Trump, stating “we lost our shirts with China, and now China is dying to make a deal.”

With Biden emerging as a likely Democrat candidate to oppose Trump in the 2020 election, his campaign has increasingly focused on Biden’s international failures when negotiating abroad.

From The Hill:

President Trump on Friday said his administration’s efforts to resolve a trade dispute with China and seek nuclear disarmament with North Korea amounted to cleaning up a “mess” created by the Obama administration.

“If you look at what we’ve straightened out, I call it the Obama-Biden mess,” Trump told reporters outside the White House. “We’re straightening it out, whether it’s North Korea … you were going to end up in a war with North Korea, and now the relationship is a good relationship.”

“You look at what Joe Biden has done with China … we lost our shirts with China [under the Obama administration], and now China is dying to make a deal,” he added.

The Trump administration’s trade negotiations with China erupted last month, resulting in new tariff action on billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese and American goods.

Chinese officials recently said that no further deals to resolve longstanding trade issues between the two countries will be considered until the Trump administration removes all tariffs on Chinese goods. U.S. officials, meanwhile, have warned that some tariffs would need to remain in place as an enforcement measure in the event of a potential deal.
Trump’s efforts to negotiate with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took an optimistic turn a few days ago when Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to set foot on North Korean soil at the Demilitarized Zone, where he met with Kim.
The two countries are reportedly in the process of planning a third summit between the two leaders after a meeting earlier this year ended without significant progress.
